Animal Biotechnology
Head of Department: Prof. Mahnohar P.T.
Designation: Assistant Professor
About Department:
Animal biotechnology has been used to produce genetically modified animals that synthesize therapeutic proteins, have improved growth rates or are resistant to disease. Advances in animal biotechnology have been facilitated by recent progress in sequencing animal genomes, gene expression and metabolic profiling of animal cells. More recently, genome editing technologies (Zinc Finger Nucleases, TALENS, and CRISPR-Cas systems) have opened up new opportunities to easily create genetic variations in animals that can improve their health and well-being, agricultural production, and protection against diseases.
Animal Biotechnology at Aditya Agricultural Biotechnology College
Overview
Animal Biotechnology is a specialized branch of biotechnology focused on the application of molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnological tools in animal breeding, health, and production. It plays a crucial role in improving animal welfare, enhancing livestock productivity, and addressing global challenges such as disease control, food security, and sustainable farming. At Aditya Agricultural Biotechnology College, we offer a robust Animal Biotechnology program that provides students with the scientific expertise and practical experience to advance the field.
Key Areas of Study
The Animal Biotechnology curriculum encompasses various fundamental and advanced topics related to the biology, genetics, and breeding of animals. Key areas of study include:
- Genetic Engineering in Animals: Techniques such as gene editing (CRISPR-Cas9) and transgenesis to introduce or modify genes in animals for improved traits like disease resistance, growth rates, and reproduction.
- Molecular Genetics: The study of genetic variation and inheritance in animals, with an emphasis on understanding genetic diseases, breeding patterns, and trait selection.
- Reproductive Biotechnology: Innovations in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), embryo transfer, and cloning to improve breeding efficiency and genetic diversity.
- Animal Health Biotechnology: Development of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutic agents to prevent and treat diseases in livestock and companion animals, contributing to public health and food safety.
- Animal Cell Culture and Biotechnology: The use of animal cells in biotechnological applications, including the production of therapeutic proteins, hormones, and vaccines.
- Ethics and Regulatory Aspects: Understanding the ethical considerations and regulatory frameworks surrounding the use of biotechnology in animals, with an emphasis on animal welfare, bioethics, and public policy.
